We're an Australian team, so we're not going to pretend we're unbiased here. But we've had enough clients come to us after offshore experiences to offer an honest comparison of both approaches.
Offshore development can work. But it works differently than most people expect.
Offshore hourly rates are significantly lower. $30-80 USD per hour compared to $150-300+ AUD for Australian developers. On paper, the savings look enormous.
In practice, the gap narrows. Offshore projects typically take longer due to communication cycles across timezones. Requirements that would be clarified in a 5-minute conversation take a day of back-and-forth messages. Misunderstandings lead to rework. And project management overhead increases.
We've seen offshore projects end up costing 70-80% of what a local team would have charged, while taking 50% longer. The per-hour saving is real. The per-project saving is often smaller than expected.
This is where the biggest gap lies. It's not about language ability — most offshore developers speak excellent English. It's about timezone overlap, cultural context, and real-time collaboration.
With a local team, you can jump on a call when something's unclear. You share business hours. Cultural references, industry terminology, and market context are understood without explanation.
With offshore teams, you're often working asynchronously. You send a message in the morning, get a response the next day. Questions that would take 5 minutes to resolve in person can take 2-3 days through written messages.
For well-defined projects with detailed specs, this works fine. For projects that require ongoing collaboration and iteration — which is most software projects — it creates friction.
Quality varies enormously in both markets. There are excellent offshore developers and mediocre local ones. Generalising about quality based on location isn't useful.
What matters more is the team's experience with your type of project, their development practices (code review, testing, documentation), and their track record with similar clients.
Want an Australian team on your project?
Exclusively local developers. No offshore, no subcontracting.
Get in TouchThat said, quality issues are harder to catch and fix when the team is in a different timezone. A bug that would be spotted in a morning standup might not surface until the next day's review cycle.
This is a legitimate concern. When you work with an Australian company, your IP is protected under Australian law. Contracts are enforceable. If something goes wrong, you have legal recourse.
With offshore teams, IP protection depends on the jurisdiction. Enforcement can be expensive, slow, or impractical. For projects involving proprietary business logic, trade secrets, or sensitive data, this risk is worth considering seriously.
Clearly defined projects with detailed specifications. Staff augmentation where offshore developers join an existing local team. Ongoing maintenance work with established processes. Cost-sensitive projects where the budget simply doesn't allow local rates.
The key is having a strong project manager on your side who can bridge the communication gap and catch issues early.
Complex projects requiring regular collaboration and iteration. Rapid prototyping and MVPs where speed matters more than cost. Projects with sensitive data or IP concerns. When you want direct access to the developers doing the work. When the project is critical to your business and you need accountability.
We work exclusively with Australian developers. No offshore. No subcontracting. When you work with us, you talk directly to the people writing the code.
This costs more per hour. But our projects tend to finish faster, with fewer rounds of revision, and with code that our clients can confidently maintain or hand off to another team.
If you have a well-defined project, a tight budget, and the ability to manage an offshore team, going offshore can work. If you need ongoing collaboration, fast iteration, or IP protection, a local team will likely deliver better outcomes even at a higher hourly rate.
If you want to discuss your specific situation, get in touch. We'll give you an honest assessment — and if offshore makes more sense for your project, we'll tell you that too.
